In September 2009, it was reported that Lavigne and husband Deryck Whibley were separating. Lavigne's third studio album, The Best Damn Thing (2007), was a great commercial success, mainly due to its lead-single, " Girlfriend" (a number-one hit in over six countries) and its successful worldwide tour, The Best Damn World Tour (2008). I was like, 'No, this is a really special record to me and this is what I'm doing'." "My record company was being a typical record company and trying to give me their version of how it should be – trying to get me to go in a different direction.

Lavigne promoted the album with a series of live performances and later embarked on The Black Star Tour (2011). The album also includes an extended version of the soundtrack single for Alice in Wonderland (2010), titled " Alice". The following singles, " Smile" and " Wish You Were Here", had moderate chart success worldwide. " What the Hell" was released as the lead single in January 2011 and achieved worldwide chart success, reaching the top 20 in the United States and United Kingdom, the top ten in Europe and Australia and the top five in Asia. Three singles were released from Goodbye Lullaby. The album debuted inside the top five in over 15 countries such as the United States and Canada (where it has since been certified gold) and topping the charts in over eight countries, such as Australia, Greece, Hong Kong and Japan. Upon its release, Goodbye Lullaby received generally mixed reviews from music critics, with some naming it her most personal and introspective album while others took issue with its subdued sound and Lavigne's lyrical content. Goodbye Lullaby is Lavigne's third and final studio album released by RCA, following The Best Damn Thing (2007). Lavigne assumed an integral role in the album's production and co-wrote every original track on Goodbye Lullaby, as well as collaborating with several producers including Max Martin, Shellback, Butch Walker, and her ex-husband Deryck Whibley. Goodbye Lullaby is a primarily a pop rock album and is considered a more introspective record from Lavigne in comparison to her previous material, consisting mainly of stripped down instruments such as the piano and acoustic guitar. Recording sessions for the album began in November 2008 and continued over a period of nearly two years, concluding in October 2010. It was released on Mathrough RCA Records. In an interview with NME, Willow called Lavigne “pop-punk royalty”, and said that “the proficiency and efficiency that both have with their art and the execution of their vision is extremely inspiring”.Goodbye Lullaby is the fourth studio album by Canadian singer and songwriter Avril Lavigne. Lavigne also joined forces with Barker on Williow’s recent single ‘Grow’ (which appeared on her fourth album, ‘Lately I Feel Everything’). It’s about valuing yourself and knowing you’re enough. I wanted to make sure I wrote music that people could relate to. A lot of these songs are about having the strength to walk away if someone doesn’t see that. She went on to say that she wants “people to feel empowered” by the record, saying: “My message is know who you are and trust who you are. I’m kind of poking fun at myself that I’ve gone through a lot in love.” “There’s a lot of reflecting upon different relationships that I have gone through and where I’m at, and even though there’s songs about past love experiences that didn’t work out, I’m in such a good place in my life that it’s still just fun and feisty and light. It’s just pure rock & roll from front to back. In a new interview with Entertainment Weekly, she teased: “It’s fast. She spoke about her vision for the record last week, saying it’s “a love letter to women” inspired by Green Day. The record is due out “at the top” of 2022 via Barker’s label DTA Records, to which she signed last month. Lavigne is yet to formally announce her new album, though we know ‘Bite Me’ – which she recently performed on The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon alongside collaborator Travis Barker – will serve as its lead single.
